After finishing a postgraduate degree from Cambridge, I was fortunate to beamong a number of Fitzwilliam graduates selected to spend a year in Japan at the Japan University of Economics, as part of the Tsuzuki Scholarship program. The program enables graduates to spend a year in Japan, studying the language and becoming familiar with Japanese culture and life. While at University, I was able to further my research in the field of penology by visiting Fukuoka prison and meeting with the staff there. This visit enabled me to write an academic article examining the different uses of space within the Japanese and British prison systems. This article was recently published and is the first article that I have had published; this would not have been possible without the generosity of the Tsuzuki Scholarship program. My fellow graduates pursued a number of careers, many in economics and finance, but I myself returned to England to continue with my research and am now a PhD student at the University of Hull where I am reading Criminology, and also continuing with my Japanese language studies. I hope to visit Fukuoka again very soon as I would like to continue my research of the Japanese penal system. The year at Daiichi was a wonderful experience for us all, and I have many fond memories of my time there, and was deeply impressed with the kindness and consideration shown by people both in and out of the gakuen.I wish the Japan University of Economics all the very best as we head into the second decade of the 21st century, and hope that its increasingly international student body make the most of the opportunities on offer to pursue fulfilling careers and contribute to the life of their countries.
